Gregor Avsenik

Gregor Avsenik is the youngest son of Slavko and Brigita Avsenik. His guitar style is very recognisable and it also creates a new music style. He began to play the guitar when he was 12 years old as a student at  Professor L. Rus, and he also received the highest national awards at public competitions in the former Yugoslavia. He was  a member and a concertmaster at the Guitar orchestra in Ljubljana for many years, and he also wrote songs for it. He has always surprised and thrilled the audience with his original author ideas.

When he was 16 he started playing in his father's ensemble , where he recorded  waltz »Moje sanje«. Then  polka »Fant s kitaro« followed with which he impressed the audience at one of the most popular TV shows abroad - the »Musikantenstadel« (a very famous and popular TV show in Austria). From that moment on, his father Slavko and his uncle Vilko regularly wrote songs for him.

At the age of 22 Gregor took over the renovated inn and restaurant Avsenik« Pri Jožovcu«, which developed very quickly after 1988. It was his idea and initiative to have more and more music evenings in the inn, which became very popular in the hall »under the Avsenik umbrella«. The grand opening was in 1997, when the Ensemble of Grega Avsenik was playing for the first time. His ensemble also recorded a lot of author songs and regularly performed in Slovenia and abroad.

Because he was too busy with managing the inn and having a 7- member family, he decided to disband the ensemble in 2000. As a solo artist he performed with  ensemble Gašperji, later also with the Avsenik house ensemble. He created the ensemble together with Marjan Legat, because of the need for  music evenings in the Inn.
Recently, he has been performing and collaborating more and more often with his son's ensemble Sašo Avsenik ensemble.
He has received honour award OBERKRAINER AWARD for his 30 year work in the folk music industry as a musician and organizer, and for his life-work .
